As soon as he gave up to a long night of deserved rest, he saw 𝒉𝒊𝒎 again: covered in filthy rags, paralyzed in his own tortured body, unable to utter a single word. He wanted to reach him, grab him, make him understand that he was there 𝒇𝒐𝒓 him, 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 him, but his body wouldn't respond. Every step forward pushed him further and further back, further and further away. Pieces of the ceiling began to detach and collapse onto the floor, violently erasing the other's presence, without Mello being able to do anything. And with another violent shake, he lost control of his own body as it shattered along with the floor of that cursed attic.'𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭. 𝐈 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈'𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞.'His eyelids gave up, closing shut his exhausted, swollen eyes, lungs grasping for every scrap of oxygen, until he felt 𝒉𝒊𝒔 presence beside him, the redhead's hands caressing his cheeks, a serene smile painted on his face, but Mello couldn't touch him, he did not have any strength left to move: he was ready to let go completely if it allowed him to be with Matt again, wherever he was.'Wake up, moron. This isn't really happening.'Mello's eyes widened, his own voice snatching him from such terrible visions, as if the most rational part of Mello himself had woken him. Darkness surrounded him, along with the silence of the night that pervaded a place he could no longer call home, not when Matt was stuck in a hospital room. The blond was lying between the crumpled sheets of his bed, drops of sweat running down his forehead, merging with his golden strands, the clothes he was wearing reduced to a humid mess. He was afraid to close his eyes, to return to a dimension cruelly shaped by excruciating guilt now that he was vulnerable and unable to act, now that all he could do was to wait.( . . . . . )"Finally."The voice of the very last person he expected to see in his home woke him up."What are you doing here, fratellino?"Visibly surprised, Mello glanced at the younger one, who was hunched in a dark corner, who had paid him attention for just a moment, his complete focus belonging to pieces of a white puzzle, back turned to the blond. The older one approached him, reducing the distance, placing a hand on his shoulder: the impact tore through Near's skin, opening a deep wound that he seemed unable to feel."What the fuck?!" Mello shouted, shaking the other forcefully, further shattering the younger one's delicate skin, covered in cuts that devoured his figure rapidly."No. NO!!"Fingers moved to cover his eyes: the scenario before him tore Mello's chest apart, aware that touching his brother again would only make things worse, and that caused him to collapse to the ground, unable to think, to speak, to breathe."????"He felt a light pressure on his eyes, followed by a weak, muffled sound."Hey, you." Mello muttered weakly: what brought him back to reality was the little furball that Matt surprised him with not too long ago, a creature that sensed the human's torment and was determined to not leave his side.
Mello observed him for a long moment, through tears, as the kitten moved beside his face, licking his cheek, curling close to his neck between purrs. He exhaled long, deep breaths, surrounded by the sweat of yet another battle, back arching for him to sit on his bed, lifting the kitten up between his hands, watching him curiously as it let out long, shrill meows.
Touched by that sweetness, Mello's lips curved into the softest of smiles."When he comes back home,
we must give you a proper name. He's such an idiot, it should have been the very first thing to do with you."

I can't quite explain how it all began. My mind decided to erase everything that could be erased. What I saw seemed like the most effective solution: people easy to manipulate, the freedom to have the last word with the support of a gun, lots and lots of money, weapons hidden in the most unexpected places but within reach. At first, that kind of adrenaline and the feeling of having full control kept me alive, but then something changed. Those people were no longer people, but pieces of lifeless human flesh, without an existence to return to and all that money began to stank terribly; but it was too late to change things. I was completely stained with a blood that wasn't mine, more than all of them put together. I'd go home and vomit for hours: who was I to decide who had the right to be alive? I lived through that carnage with a nausea that prevented me from breathing. I wanted to change my life, change everything, rewrite everything from scratch. I wanted a normal life, to be a normal guy like everyone else, to go back and reopen the gates of that orphanage, to return to a place that, after all, wasn't so bad compared to this hell. I wanted to go back to him. From the first moment I confronted him, I was afraid he'd spit in my face because I deserved it, and I still feel I deserve it. For years, I denied myself the affection that Nate never stopped showing me, even when I did everything I could to act like an asshole, even when there was no reason to. But he's better than me. My brother knows how to forgive, he knows how to understand, he knows how to help me stand up when everything is falling apart, and I can only learn from a brilliant mind and a pure heart like his. Since we've grown closer, I'm learning that yeah, I was wrong, but yeah, I still have the right to be happy, to break my boundaries without destroying anyone, but I could never do it without him, not anymore, not without him watching me from afar even when I'm far away, not without his giving a continuity to what unites us, even when my demons consume my mind. And without my brother's great strength in allowing me to live a second life, I would never have been able to open myself up to life itself nor open my heart to Matt.He has always been there for me, even when I didn't understand the importance of his silence in front of my anger.
I didn't want to involve him in this mud, but at the same time, I couldn't and can't do without him anymore, without his kindness, without his presence that allows me to live, breathing deeply the oxygen that is cleansing me.
I was terribly afraid of offering him the worst part of me, which is why I waited so long before confessing my feelings. How could I love him if I hated myself to the point of disgust?
Now I'm letting myself go; I really need to be closer to him, to know that every morning I'll start a new day by his side, to see him smile, and believe me, I'd get my hands dirty again for that smile, to see him happy and give him the life he deserves. And I suck at showing him how I feel with words alone, because they're not enough, but I know that every time I hold him in my arms he knows and feels everything, because I can deny it until I get exhausted, but Matt knows me too well, even better than I do myself. He can read my glances, the tone of my voice, and for that, I'm grateful.
I'm grateful to both of them because I didn't think I had any hope. I saw my fate already sealed, straight to hell. And maybe I will end up in hell, but knowing that I lived with dreams to make true, with the will to start over, and perhaps, with the hope of being able to forgive myself, one day.[VERSIONE ITALIANA]Non so raccontare bene come tutto è iniziato, la mia testa ha deciso di cancellare il cancellabile.

In this section you'll find a list made of the people who matters the most to Mello ⸻ Under Construction!

Some time after the long introspective journey that slowly changed his life, Mello allowed himself to see Matt under the light that a part of his heart had always seen him: much more than just a friend, more than the safe haven Matt had always been for him. However, it wasn't easy for Mello to come to terms with how deep his feelings for Matt were: the fear of putting him into life threatening situations consumed his soul to such an extent that, at first, convinced him to keep everything to himself, but eventually he couldn't hold back his feelings any longer and literally opened up to him in one breath.
Their relationship has never affected their work on the Kira case in the slightest, because even though Mello can barely keep his emotions in check he knows when's time to spoil his boyfriend and when he must focus on work.
Their new life together and the calm Matt manages to instill in him has literally improved both Mello's mood and his chaotic nature. An important part of this idyll is Shadow, a few-month-old black kitten that Mello found while exploring an abandoned building. Faced with the frightened and hungry cat, Mello didn't think twice and took him home with him.
Shadow quickly learned to absorb Mello's behavior, gradually becoming his spit copy and despite playing pranks on him quite often (mostly to have his attention), he blindly trusts the blond and is very fond of him.
Around Matt, Shadow is much calmer, not only because he chose the kitten's name but also because the sound of his voice soothes Shadow. Unlike Mello, Matt is more willing to set everything aside and spend time with the little cat!

After years of seeing Near as a sworn rival, the fracture in Mello's heart has brought out, one by one, his true emotions, including the sincere affection he's always felt for Near, which was suffocated by his own ardent wish to be the best at all costs, since their childhood. At some point, Mello had to put aside his pride and fully open up to Near, telling him that, deep down, he adored him and all his hatred had made them both waste precious time they could have spent together. Although pride and stubbornness are still a great obstacle, Mello sincerely adores Near and is more than happy to be like an older brother to him, a role he fully embraced along with his being an important part of the other's team, the SPK. He tries his best not to give in to his reckless actions and ideas so as not to worry his brother, while also trying to tame his sense of protectiveness that often feels overwhelming and suffocating, despite his genuine intentions. With time, Mello started to address the youngest with his real name, along with spoiling him with excessive gifts he likes to surprise his brother with when he less expect it

The excess of wine from a few days ago knocked me out for too long. I couldn't get up, so I slept for hours. I slept until my mind transported me to a dimension that reality could never have created.I was with L. I walked into his office, slamming the door open and locking it behind me. I felt my own anger burning my skin.He greeted me with icy politeness, I went straight to the point. I started yelling in his face that since I was a child, I'd always seen him as an inspiration, that mentor who would most likely guide me toward a future that was challenging but full of satisfaction. I would have done anything to make him proud of me."I thought you were beyond brilliant, an infallible meteor, a machine studying meticulously every clue until you held irrefutable proof between you hands. You let yourself be fooled like the worst of rookies instead."My own voice echoed all over the room, yet, he didn't flinch. It pissed me off even more, so I continued."That stupid 13-day rule was patently false. There's no way you've been fooled by such kind of bullshit. You, who won't leave out a single suspicious detail. If you really had any doubts, you should have taken more time."He finally stared at me, his attention belonging to every word I said."What the fuck was the point of letting yourself get consumed by haste? Even I would have been patient and worked out a much more detailed plan of action. If Kira took out Watari first and then you, but indirectly, there had to be a fucking Shinigami nearby. And you didn't use that monster to obtain proofs?"I could clearly hear my voice trembling. He let me finish, explaining that he had the evidence. If he'd thrown Amane behind bars, he'd have carved the words out of her.I approached him and slammed the bowl of ice cream he was concentrating on onto the ground."You just wanted to win and get the game over as soon as possible, of course, because to you it was a fucking game. You didn't think about the fucking consequences, the orphanage, nor the rest. Tell me what the fuck was it all for if people kept passing away."He told me that those sacrifices were necessary. Without those deaths, without more bloodshed, his successor wouldn't have been able to see who he was dealing with.My mind went to Nate, to Matt, to the childhood we never truly lived.
So I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and started screaming at the top of my lungs.
I shouted every kind of insult at him, but he didn't flinch.
For a moment, I felt it wasn't just me yelling at him. It was him too. That child who had harbored a burning resentment for years.
"You're just a selfish asshole. I could have lived a childhood like a normal, fucking kid. Me, Nate, Matt. What the fuck was the point of burning our heads day and night? Did you want us to end up like this? To be fucking clones playing with other people's lives?
I spent years hating Nate. For years I let this damn burden burn my head and heart."
Before I knew it, I couldn't see him anymore. My eyes were filled with tears."Because of you, I lost pieces of life that I could have shared with Nate and Matt. We all wasted time and years, burned resources, just because you wanted to win at all costs."He wasn't understanding a single word I was saying, his brilliant mind couldn't elaborate such concepts. I let him go and walked away. I could have punched him at any moment."I don't give a fuck if I'll live or not. I don't even care about following your example or complying with your twisted morals.
I am not and will never be like you. I will stop that asshole with my own hands if he gets too close to the ones I love the most in the world. No stupid notebook will stop me."
I walked away, struggling to drag my body. I didn't even pay much attention to his stunned expression. I realized who he really was; the veil covering my eyes had fallen, I didn't want to see him anymore.I left the room and woke up. I was drenched in sweat. All I wanted was to abandon myself between Matt's arms.[VERSIONE ITALIANA]L'eccesso di vino di qualche giorno fa mi ha fatto dormire per troppo tempo.
Me ne andai trascinandomi a fatica.

That night, I hopped on my motorcycle and took a long ride, without thinking twice. The city was deserted, the road was mine, so I began to ride aimlessly, devouring every kilometer.Unbeknownst to me, I ended up in front of my very first apartment, the place I called home when I moved to this side of the world. From the outside, the building looked lived-in, worn. No one lived there anymore, and curiosity was consuming me. I stepped inside. That flat had changed so much. The smell of dust filled my lungs immediately, the walls of the entryway were frozen in a slice of time I struggle to place properly.I walked toward the single, small room that had been the heart of my new life, and what my eyes saw took my breath away: the scarlet red walls had been consumed by a fire that had spared nothing, not even the furnitures, consumed by a force no one could stop.Step by step, the floor creaked; nature was silently taking over my old home: multiple branches embraced all that remained of my desk, leaves covered my old, now burned, bed.I kept walking, feeling the brittleness of the floor beneath my boots, and then, it gave way: I fell into what was left of my desk, shattering the wood that cushioned the impact against the floor, a hit that did not prevent the damage. My head was exploding, I could barely breathe; my gaze fell to the right side of the room, to my destroyed bookcase: my books, the volumes I couldn't save when I fled that place, were still there, ruined by the fire. A little further away, Near's white puzzle, gnawed by time: his last gift, found in my backpack.I wanted to get up, but the pain of the fall was too excruciating; I wanted to see what had survived the devastation but my eyes found something else: one of Matt's consoles, its gray plastic fused onto the nightstand, melted with it, not far from the bookcase. I wanted to grab it, but I didn't have the strength; every effort made the pain pounding in my head much worse.I wanted to leave, but my anger began to boil over. I grabbed the wood pieces of the desk, hurling them at my own books. I immediately regretted it: the bookcase collapsed, I saw the the ceiling shake. Burned pieces of plaster began to fall, landing on me. I felt dirty and sore, covered in ash, soot, and dust. The loneliness was suffocating me. My escape had destroyed everything, even the few memories I had, pieces of life I'd left in ruins. They were parts of their childhood and seeing them ruined for good hurt me much more than my body, which was getting unresponsive from the pain. I told myself, maybe I deserve this. I should have taken care of them, but I failed.I can't say how long I spent there among the rubble. What pricked my ears was a giggle, a child's laughter, piercing the silence of that room. I thought I'd imagined it, but it grew louder and more vivid, getting closer and closer."......"The purest part of me was there, before my eyes. That child, with his immaculate heart and full of dreams, stood clutching a teddy bear, smiling tenderly at me.
I struggled to stand up. He approached me, I hesitated. I didn't want to touch him, I didn't want to contaminate him with the dirt I was made of and carried. I was dirty, wounded, filthy; he was clean, almost seraphic, in all his innocence.
But he went closer anyway, without uttering a word, wrapping his arms around my waist, holding me in a gentle grip that gradually made the weight on my heart slip away. I felt strangely relieved, serene. He took my hand and we walked down a long corridor, gradually clearing away the destructive fury of the fire; the walls were white and untouched. We arrived in my bedroom, the room I was assigned back at the orphanage: it was messy, full of scattered books, misplaced toys and crumpled homework papers. In front of us, a wide-open window, frameless, where a cool, clean breeze brushed against us.We reached the edge of the window. There, he held me again, just before using a superhuman strength to push me down, until I fell into the void, unable to see the bottom, feeling only the speed of the impending impact. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding him tightly, wanting only to save him.I opened my eyes. The ringtone of my own phone brought me back to the room devoured by flames. The cold air of the early morning hit me: the bookcase had smashed through an already broken window, letting the first light of dawn in.I grabbed my device and saw countless missed calls and dozens of texts: Matt was looking for me, fearing the worst. I called him back and explained what had happened. He'd be there soon and get me out of there. I tried to brush off at least some of the dirt, so as not to scare him, but I was covered in soot. When he arrived, he smothered me between his arms, scared to death. He was crying, but he calmed himself to help me get out of that place.I'm almost certain that after that ordeal, I never managed to turn off my phone's GPS. I can't blame him.[VERSIONE ITALIANA]Quella notte saltai sulla mia moto e feci un lunghissimo giro, senza pensarci due volte. A fatica, mi alzai.
